| System | Best suited to | What you see indoors | Outdoor units | Things to consider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single split | One bedroom, living room, home office or small shop | Slim wall unit (or floor console) | One per indoor unit | Simplest, most cost-effective per room; each room runs independently |
| Multi-split | Two to five rooms in a flat or house | Wall, floor or ceiling units, which can be mixed | One shared unit | Saves façade or balcony space; all rooms depend on one outdoor unit |
| Ceiling cassette | Offices, shops, restaurants, open-plan spaces | Square grille flush with a suspended ceiling | One per system | Needs ceiling void depth; spreads air evenly in four directions |
| Ducted | High-end homes, fit-outs, multiple rooms per unit | Only discreet supply and return grilles | One per system | Best planned during refurbishment; access panels needed for servicing |
| VRF / VRV | Larger commercial buildings with many zones | Any mix of commercial indoor units | One or more large units | Individual zone control at scale; design and controls are more involved |
If you are not sure where to start, the state of your current system (if you have one) usually points to the right service. Here is how we would triage your enquiry.
Start with an installation survey. We look at the rooms you want to cool or heat, how they are used, where an outdoor unit could go and how pipework and drainage can be routed. The result is a written quotation for the system that suits the space.
Bedrooms, top-floor flats, lofts and home offices are the most common starting points. See domestic air conditioning for the options.
Offices, shops and hospitality venues usually need a survey that also considers landlord requirements and working hours.
Book a service. Clean filters and coils, a clear condensate drain and checked refrigerant pressures restore efficiency and often prevent the faults people first notice in a heatwave. Businesses with several units or sites may be better served by a planned maintenance programme.
Request a repair visit and tell us the symptoms: not cooling, water dripping, ice on pipes, unusual noises, smells or an error code on the display. The make and model help us prepare. If a system is old or uses an obsolete refrigerant, we will explain whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
Tell us what you need and where. The form takes a couple of minutes.
We review your rooms, layout, unit positions and any consents required.
A clear written quotation with the equipment and work set out.
Careful installation, commissioning and a full handover of the controls.
For most flats, a wall-mounted split system is the most practical choice: it is compact, quiet and efficient, and provides heating as well as cooling. If you want to cool several rooms but have space or consent for only one outdoor unit, a multi-split is often the answer. Your lease and building rules will also influence what is possible.
Portable units can help in a short heatwave, but they are noisier, less efficient and vent hot air through a hose at the window, which limits their effect. A fixed split system removes heat to an outdoor unit, so it cools far more effectively and quietly, and can heat the room in winter too.
Yes, we can service and repair most makes of split, multi-split and commercial air conditioning. Let us know the make and model if you can, along with any error codes or symptoms, so we can prepare for the visit and bring the right equipment.
A service is a single visit to clean, inspect and test a system. Maintenance is a planned programme of those visits, scheduled around how hard the equipment works, with records kept over time. Homes usually just need an annual service; offices, shops and server rooms with several units often benefit from planned maintenance.
Replacement is worth considering when a system is old, uses a refrigerant that is no longer available for top-ups, needs an expensive part such as a compressor, or has become unreliable. Newer inverter systems are typically more efficient too. We set out the reasoning either way so you can decide.
Yes. Most current split, multi-split, cassette and ducted systems are reverse-cycle heat pumps, providing efficient heating as well as cooling from the same indoor units. Many customers use them to heat rooms that central heating struggles with, such as conservatories, lofts and extensions.
Describe the space and the problem you’re trying to solve (too hot, too cold, a noisy or failing system) and we’ll point you in the right direction.
